Creatine kinase in neonatal screening for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: an acceptability assessment

چکیده

Objective: The present study evaluated the acceptance among parents of newborns to creatine kinase (CK) test in neonatal screening Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy-DMD and raised possible barriers elements that facilitate test. Methods: assessment CK for DMD was carried out through interviews, guided by a semi-structured script, with state Mato Grosso, Brazil. Results: Six hundred four participated research, only five being excluded not meeting eligibility criteria. respondents high (94.5%), surpassing described retrieved literature. Long journeys collection site absence information about disease can negatively influence regarding performance reduction diagnostic delay seems be positive factor screening. Conclusions: Non-mandatory using demonstrated interviewed population; however, research has identified factors both motivate discourage

Screening for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy can be diagnosed with confidence before it is clinically apparent, and excluded with certainty where it may have seemed clinically obvious. This has been made possible by the demonstration of a grossly raised level of serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) (Ebashi et al., 1959; Dreyfus, Schapira, and Demos, 1960). Highest levels (up to 100 times normal) are found early i...

[Screening for Duchenne muscular dystrophy].

A programme was introduced in Wales to screen all 18 month old boys who were not yet walking for raised creatine kinase activity within the existing community developmental screening programme. During an 18 month period 25 229 such boys were identified of whom 19 930 (79%) had a Denver developmental screening test and 338 (1.7%) of these were not walking. Two hundred and five of those who did n...

Screening for neonatal Duchenne muscular dystrophy by bioluminescence measurement of creatine kinase in a blood sample spotted on paper.

Neonatal screening for Duchenne-type muscular dystrophy is greatly simplified by use of a new bioluminescence procedure for creatine kinase. The blood of newborn myopathic children consistently showed increased activity. The improved method permits the analysis from a dried sample of whole blood spotted on filter paper; it shows high correlation with existing procedures and is highly specific a...

Feasibility of neonatal screening for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

During the period November 1976 to September 1980, 2703 babies born in one Edinburgh hospital were screened in the neonatal period by estimation of their serum creatine kinase levels for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Among the 2336 male babies tested, none proved to be affected and only 16 required second specimens to be obtained. Overall the false positive rate in the study was 0.78%. This stud...

Newborn screening for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) occurs in about 1 of 3,000 to 4,000 boys. Laboratory evidence of the disease, notably elevated creatinephosphokinase (CPK), is present already in the newborn infant. Unspecific CPK elevation occurs in the newborn as well, yet disappears shortly thereafter, while in DMD patients the CPK remains high throughout infancy. A new method to reliably determine CPK in a...
